Volunteer your time: Make a difference

Wendy . Blog Publicado 20 Diciembre 2013

Organize and carry out an event. Talk to people and get to know them. Practice your languages on our multi-lingual campus. Then give all the proceeds to charity!

That's what we do in the Language Center, and we've been doing it for 9 years. Have you noticed? It was hard not to if you were in Building B this trimester. Maybe you saw the GIANT PUMPKINS on display or heard the CHRISTMAS CAROLS. You might even have participated.

Many of you WERE involved in the VOLUNTEER activities, donating your time and effort, demonstating your culinary skills, your sales ability, and your recycling efforts at our cooking contest, candy cane sale and book exchange & sale. We appreciate your help and the NGO Aprendices Visuales will too. You may also have earned a Mandela Campus T-shirt for your help and enthusiasm. A special thanks goes to the NURSING DEPARTMENT staff, and the student volunteers. Ana Correia and Sofia Sousa, Erasmus exchange students from Portugal, volunteered to sell candy canes for the Language Center. Thank you !

* Next March we'll have another book sale. You're all welcome to participate.

And the outcome of our charity events so far?

This November in collaboration with the NURSING SCHOOL: 802 €

- Our CANDY CANES FOR SALE: : 341.18 €

TOTAL: 1,741.18 € .............

+ 10 Canadian cents + 25 Republica de Filipinas cents !

Thank you for your collaboration. Without YOU we wouldn't have been so successful.

Merry Christmas and Happy 2014 !!!!!!

Hello Wendy! I think it is a very good idea that English Department cares about this type of activities and make people to participe, it is great to see!! I want to collaborate next time, it is very rewarding and you can meet people too. All of us can occasionally make that effort despite sometimes we have not enough time, I am going to try.

Hi Wendy! This is an interesting activity because there are two good things. First, you can speak with others persons and practice other language. Second, you can help. I believe these activities are useful to students, and we should participate.

It look like an awesome initiative!! I'm so surprised! I think that the labour that you Wendy, and your english-lab mates are doing in the Uem is worthy of admiration and an a real example of good behavior. I was participating in a volunteer activity when I was a child in the school, we used to go to a social dining room and start to give out food to people who really needed. It was a really good experience for me as person, and helped me to understand the bad situation that some people are living. I was happy have had the chance to help this people.
