Spanish History-3

Wendy . Blog Publicado 25 Octubre 2013

This arch is visible from the freeway/highway/expressway/dual-carriage way/ motorway. That's "autopista" for those of you who speak Spanish. It's about 2 hours from Madrid, going north. If you're paying attention you'll see it high on the hill on your left. What is it? Where is it? Who built it?

Advice: There is a great little village up there too. You should go there and walk around sometime. A UEM student years ago said his family was going to open a "Casa Rural", a rustic Country Inn, a Bed & Breakfast place up by the plaza. I wonder if they did? I'll have to go again someday and find out.

More Advice: Look at Spanish History, January 2013 and Spanish History 2, February 2013 on SHAKESPEARE SLEPT HERE. Do you recognize those places too?

Hi Wendy. I think you are writing about Medinaceli, in Soria. We can see a Roman Arch, built around 1st or 2nd Century (Domitian’s age) using Trajan’s style. It was working as commemorative monument and as village entrance. About your post “Spanish History 2”, I think you have written about “Muelle de las Carabelas”, in Huelva. It’s a recreation of original pier of 15th Century where Cristobal Colón started his famous travel to discover America (from Palos de la Frontera). We can see at the picture “La Pinta”, “La Niña” y “La Santa María”. In this first travel, he left Spain in August 3rd, 1492. Your picture was taken near of the “Día de la Hispanidad”, Octuber 12nd. I’m right? See you.

I think Spain it is a great country with a lot of history. Sometimes we travel for the country and do not pay attention of all the things that we see. This arch it is an example of the great arquitecture that we have. It would be interesting to see the arch at first person.

I don't know where this building is, but surely It is a fantastic place where you can visit a lot of times. The advantage which we have is that we live in a country whose cities, villages etc can become visited for everybody who want to learn some history. For this reason, Spain is a country whose buildings and places are declared area of world heritage site.

I don't actually recognize this arch. But in Malaga, where is was born, there is a magnificent preserved Roman theatre which is the envy of many other Roman ruins in Spain

It´s the Arch of Medinacelli. It is a roman monument built during the first century at the top of a hill to demonstrate the power of the Roman Empire. It´s the only one with tree doors that we can find in Spain. The name of the village, Medinacelli, is islamic. It means the city of the sky. It´s a really nice place to visit but in winter is very cold.

Hi Wendy: Firstly, i have to say that I've never seen this arch before but i think it's beautiful! It's possible that we are seeing it higher on the left due to our perspective. Consequently, I looked for information about this monument and i have discovered that it's the arch of Medinaceli. It's placed in Soria and it would be a good idea to visit it!

Spain is a goldmine in terms of antiques in the wild. Nothing more to see the amount of excavation or sites that are along its length, if not the beauty of their land, from north to south.

In my opinion Spain have a lot of luck, we have a lot of history since the begining a lot of civilitations was staying in the Iberian peninsula so, if you pay attention, you can see a lot of monuments anywhere If you wanted to learn about history, Spain is a great place

This arch is in Medinaceli, is roman architecture. Spain was dominated for Roman empire for many years, nevertheless, there are many types of architecture in our country. I lived in Galicia and there are many celtic ruins. The Celtic culture spans many countries. A lot of people know who are Asterix and Obelix who lived in the north of France, furthermore they know the film "Braveheart" that was performed by Mel Gibson in the rol of William Wallace who lived in Scotland that fought against the english army. Both of them are celtic people.
