The rain in Spain....

Wendy . Blog Publicado 01 Abril 2013

This week reminded me of the famous line from a famous song in the musical "My Fair Lady": "Mi Bella Dama": "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain." The translation was "La lluvia en Sevilla es una pura maravilla." Hmm. So much for translations. Anyway, it rained, and rained and rained some more in most of Spain this last week. And all that rain water rushed down the rivers. I've been across this bridge a hundred times, but I've never seen the river look like this. There is usually a beautiful park where the trees are.

The bridge was built expecting the water to reach this level. Someone was thinking ahead. The local people, however don't remember the water ever being this high.

Vocabulary: reach: alcanzar think ahead: pensar en el futuro

In my opinion we are forunates because in Spain there are a very good weather but when it rains a lot it causes damage in the environment and it is sad to see beautiful areas in that way. These images show us that in Spain hard rains harm towns and cities.

It´s said that this month of March has been the wettest in the last 73 years. In the Guadalquivir basin there was an average of 190 liters per square meter while the historical average is 46 liters per m2. This means that it was four times higher than the historical average. This has never happened before in Spain.

This has been an unexpected occurrence in Spain because in this country there are an excelent weather during the year. For example, in Andalucía thas been rainy a lot and the rivers as Guadalquivir there was an important average that have surprised everyone. I expect that the weather could be better in these months.

I'm going to writte about the “rain in spain” mainly, in seville. I'm from this city and i can tell you that the sentence “La lluvia en Sevilla es una maravilla” is not really true. The rain is Seville is good because it never rains in our city (not too much). But this year has been special, it has rain a lot and this has been pretty sad for Seville. The people from there are not used to the water, so when it rains people are sad. The sun could means the happiness, for these reason we can not live when it's raining each day. For example, in the holy week, if it's raining, people can't see the processions and all get depressed and the business can't sell nothing. To rain is good for us, but just sometimes and never in our holy weeks (including Feria).

I think this year is spectacular in relation with the rain. We have our dams near the 100%. By the way, the spanish translations are very curious. For example, the translation for "Die Hard" was "Jungla de Cristal"
