What's coming tomorrow? What's going on around you right now?
I always seem to be writing about what we've just done or what we are planning to do in the not too distant future. This does complicate the "here and now" which almost doesn't seem to exist. One lucky student, or maybe just a smart student was out on a bench in the garden as others walked by. She was oblivious to the others, just soaking up the sunshine. I wonder what she was thinking. 'This feels so good. I'm just relaxing for a few minutes. Soaking up the sun' Or more probably, 'I have an exam and I don't know anything. I don't know anything. I'm going to fail it. I can't learn all of this by tomorrow. I'll have to study all night.' Oh, I hope that's not what was running through her mind. I hope she was just enjoying the moment. It's a pity she didn't see the birds in the tree nor the rabbit hopping by her. I thought, "I wish I were out there right now and not here behind this window, typing away.
Recently I received a nice little book. It is rather enlightening. Basically it says that instead of running around non-stop, worrying about the past and the future we need to slow down and reflect on the present. As we used to say at Berkeley in the 60's, "Slow down. Take time to smell the flowers" We studied very hard. We read a lot. We spent hours and hours getting ready for exams, writing essays, or preparing projects. Then we sat back and relaxed. We found time to go to concerts, sit around with our friends and solve the problems of the world as we knew it. We kept up to date in our studies so that we could kick back and soak up the sun.
Don't stress out over exams and project deadlines. Plan ahead. Keep up a good pace. Follow a schedule. Then you can work and play, work and play and relax in between. Things haven't changed so much for university students of the computer age, except for the fact that you have all the information you could possibly need in seconds. Think posiitive. Be positive. Keep at it. What you do today will influence who you become tomorrow.
Be sure you notice the little things. Enjoy your cup of coffee. Really listen to your friends, Spend some time alone. Walk around the campus and check out the flowers.
And occasionally just stop for a moment, wherever you are, and feel the wind at your back or blowing in your hair. Look around. Life is good. The time is now. Seize the moment. I hope to see more of you, out in the gardens, relaxing. Turn off your cell phone and computer. Don't communicate with anyone. You planned ahead. Now you have a few minutes between clases. You have time to stop and smell the flowers.
