Exchange Students

Wendy . Blog Shakespeare slept here! Publicado 31 Enero 2012

New faces on campus.

The new 2nd semester exchange students have arrived ! Have you met any of them? I have. We just finished a session entitled "Culture Shock" in which we talked a bit about what foreign students notice when they come to Spain. What's the same? What's different?

. "Kissing" was one of the topics. There's a lot of kissing going on in Spain. Greeting friends. Saying good-bye to friends. In France too. And in Italy? In Mexico? In Bosnia? The exchange students from the US were surprised. "No... we keep our space.", one commented as she showed the distance people keep when meeting each other. "Maybe a hand shake. That's all." Well, this is Spain. And the exchange students will all have to get used to kissing total strangers when they're introduced or kissing a friend who's been away for a weekend. Ah, Spain.....Friendly country.

I’m 40 and Spanish… When I was a child, people didn’t kiss each other as they do now. This “fashion” started in the 80's, when I was a teenager. I don’t remember my father, for example, kissing a woman at work when being introduced.

These are the cultural differences that make the countries to be enriched and so interesting! It would be boring if we would all be the same but, of course, is not always easy to fit in different countries but I am sure, once you try, you will always like to know new people and cultures.
