1€ + 1€ + 1€ = many Euros and Who's the best cook at UEM?

Wendy . Blog Publicado 03 Diciembre 2014

Thanksgiving in Spain? Well, we celebrated our 10th Thanksgiving Pie Tasting Feast here at UEM on November 27th. 36 desserts and several drinks were donated by staff and students. The "bake sale" was on. Everyone taste-tested 4 desserts and voted on the best. They also talked about Thanksgiving and cooking, and hung around practicing their English. The total euros collected: 416.60€.

We always give the money earned from our activities to charity, and this year we chose the NGO Amigos de Sierra Leona. Their director Susan Cole brought in a cake herself, chatted with the volunteers, talked about the NGO on the EUROPEA RADIO and helped us with the sale.
We've always sent our combined donation for the academic year's events to the chosen NGO in the spring, but due to the desperate situation in Sierra Leona caused by the outbreak of Ébola, we were asked to step up the process. Amigos de Sierra Leona were counting on our contribution to send off a container of medical supplies and food to the people in the quarantined area. The 416.60€ were added to the 543.95€ collected during the 19th Book Exchange & Sale, also in November. The total, 960.55€, has already been transferred to the NGO and by the end of the week the shipment should be on its way to Sierra Leona.

Thank you for participating! Remember this is a campus-wide event. We couldn't do it without all of you who come to see what's going on and try the desserts or buy a book or two.

The THANKSGIVING PIE TASTING FEAST is also a Cooking Contest:

I was helping for 30 minutes with my English class and i could meet and speak with a lot of people. The activity is very good for people because at the same time you help people tou can eat sweets and speaking english. All the profits of the sale are sent to the ONG Amigos de Sierra Leona so you know that you are helping people. Was a fantastic day.

Hello, I was a volunteer in 10th Thanksgiving Pie Tasting Feast and I tried to help speaking with the people and explaining that they could taste 4 different desserts and after that they could vote for their best. I think that it's a good idea to collaborate with the NGO but it's very difficult to decide who is the best dessert, all of them were really goods, maybe because all were made with love.

I would have love to be able to participate in this event because it is a chance to help people with such a big problem as Ébola, as well as meeting and chatting with other students. It's been collected a good amount of money (There must have been a lot of participants!) and I'll definitely celebrate next event with all of you. I want to help too!

I think these events are very interesting because they have a dual mission, practice English and especially to collaborate with a charitable cause.

I was volunteered in the fair selling books and enjoyed the experience. I unknown the objective that these events to raise money for ONG, always thought it was something internal to the university, so I never caught my attention until now. I think it's a great job where participates and collaborates many people, but also believe that the university should provide more help with things like boxes for storing books at the fair selling books.

I was there and I ate four delicious desserts and I repeated one more time with a friend so I ate five desserts and she three. I like this type of celebrations because we can help other people with the money apart that we spent a good time.

I love that sweet activity! Last year, when I arrived to this University, It was surprising for me when one day I'm crossing building B and I could see a lot of cakes and different candys. I felt in love with that iniciative, because, in addition, it was very chip. From my Point of view, this activity could do more than once per year, like that, all the students could participate.

I think that is a important event, to collect money for the fight about the ébola, because in many countries this increasing the mortality. The activities have been very interesting and I have participated in one of these activities and I have spent it to me very well and it has been a great experience.
