UBUNTU | Agencia de Traducción Solidaria of the Universidad Europea de Valencia launched the second edition of the Solidarity Short Film Contest for students of Lengua B 2, taught by Ruth León last term.
This contest was for Lengua B 2 students wishing to demonstrate what the word ‘solidarity’ means to them in today’s world.
Each short film had to contain a social message and to fall into one of the following 4 film genres: a feature film, an animation film, a documentary film, or a music video clip.
Based on the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, each short film had to cover one of the following topics: human rights (women’s rights; children’s rights; minority rights; migrant’s rights, people with disabilities’ rights…); social injustice; environmental issues; freedom of thought, conscience and religion; hunger; or health issues.
The objectives of this contest were (1) to address a human rights related topic, (2) to dignify victims, (3) and to encourage open discussions regarding a specific situation of vulnerability around students.
In what follows, you can find the work done by students.
WALK ON BY MY SIDE – 1st prize
By Louise-Armance Degenne, Irene Mena Soriano, Isabel Peris Biosca & Iris Tomás Laserna
Genre: Music video clip
Topic: Minority rights and social injustice (Mandela`s view on freedom)
Concept: To show the power of solidarity, how it can change people´s behavior, way of thinking and to what extent it is a necessity for a rightful society.
Song lyrics
Discrimination a misguided direction, we follow paths leading to destruction.
We seem to stand aside, as other suffer, feel powerless as a rule of action.
But I´ll walk the long road to freedom tonight,
Till every race and color, can walk on by my side.
Is war truly the only course of action? Seems as though peace is a minor rupture
Investing all efforts in ammunition, yet no bomb seems to resolve the issues
But I´ll walk the long road to freedom tonight,
Till every race and color, can walk on by my side.
Hmm (x2)
Yet we seem to forget how it can all change through solidarity, understanding we are one.
But I´ll walk the long road to freedom tonight,
Till every race and color, can walk on by my side.

THE DARKNESS OF PINK – 2nd prize
By Amparo Martínez, María Requena, Ana Belén Romero & Francesca Zanella
Genre: Music video clip
Topic: The stereotyped image our society imposes on us that can lead to serious consequences such as anorexia or eating disorders.
Concept: Our video clip tells the struggling story of a ballet dancer who starts suffering eating disorders. Initially, she thinks her very demanding and strict teacher is the one to blame, but later on she realizes that it is a large scale phenomenon which is affecting the whole society. Adverts, magazines and the Internet are loaded with “toxic” images of super skinny models and everybody thinks those images that we are shown non-stop represent perfection, but what about the curves of a natural feminine body? Do we want to be identical skeleton –skinny ghosts or do we want to add some appealing curves to our body?
Song lyrics
THE DARKNESS OF PINK
Everything started in a world of pink
A world of perfection
Was it real or imaginary?
Let me tell you my story.
It was one more day
The best best of my days
I was so scared, But I was in the ideal way
One step forward, another again
And what was the problem? you´ll ask yourself
The voices appear. That they don’t let me be
Collapsing my little dreams, and
I like not to believe.
The voices in my head and
There´s nothing to relieve
I live in the darkness of pink
I´d like not to believe.
The monstrosity appears everyday
I don’t know who is
It kills me every breath I take
I´d like not to believe.
I compare myself with them
But I feel that I’m not the same
The monstrosity comes out for me
And it’s repeated every day
One step forward, I´m going to win
I become strong and I´ll get out of here.
The voices appear. That they don’t let me be
Collapsing my little dreams, and
I like not to believe.
The voices in my head and
There´s nothing to relieve
I live in the darkness of pink
l'd like not to believe.
