San Francisco today, the wine country tomorrow

Wendy . Blog Published 23 August 2014

Greetings from California ! I went to San Francisco today, and took a walk down by the bay. Lots of people were down there, walking and riding bikes and cruising by in 2-seater go-carts. Some were speaking English of course, but I could also hear Italian and French, Chinese and SPANISH too. And as we walked along the waterfront, towards the Golden Gate Bridge, we saw a seal pop its head up to look at us and a couple of dolphin appeared several times as they chased each other towards Alcatraz. Our destination was the old FORT POINT, which was originally a SPANISH fort that protected San Francisco Bay. It's under the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge and you can go in. It's free! It was a lovely sunny day, down by the San Francisco Bay.

Do you recognize the song? It's Otis Redding: Sitting on the dock of the bay:

(SITTIN' ON) THE DOCK OF THE BAY
- written by Otis Redding and Steve Cropper
- lyrics as recorded by Otis Redding December 7, 1967, just three
days before his death in a plane crash outside Madison, Wisconsin
- #1 for 4 weeks in 1968

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah

I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay
'Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way

So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes

Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home

Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

(whistle)

Did you leave your heart in San Francisco, as the song goes, Wendy? I was there at Fisherman's Wharf (famous embarcadero) in July and the fresh seafood being sold there looked incredible! Fresh crab, shrimp and clam chowder. (If you don't know this, chowder is a thick creamy clam soup with potatoes, often served in the middle of a bread bowl). It was all so tasty and with that Pacific breeze blowing and huge tanker ships arriving from around the world, just classic. I also went to Chinatown, which feels like you're not in the U.S. at all, and had those funky fruit drinks with tapioca balls in them, so popular in Asia with teenagers. My daughter wants to do a year abroad in college and go to Singapore or Korea, so she's getting ready. People in San Francisco are crazy and unorthodox and very welcoming! Amy Small (California)

I was in San Francisco two years ago, in summer. I liked very much all I saw in the city but perhaps, what I liked the best was go for a bike ride. My husband, my children and me rented two tandems and went from San Francisco to Sausalito. Then, we returned by ferry. The song has reminded me that ride. I liked very much to cross the bridge despite the fog didn’t allow you to see well the bay and the city. After watching the YouTube that you have recommended us, I have been watching another videos and I have found one that I’ve liked. It’s another version of the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIx6_Z5v88k

Ohh Wendy! San Francisco seems a amazing place, not only to visit, but also to live there, isn´t it? People say that is one of the most friendly and open cities in USA.And the song is beautiful, I had never realized about the letter of the song until now!

I went last year to California on holidays, and the city I liked most was San Francisco. I really liked to walk down the bay and having lunch at a wonderful restaurant at Fisherman's Wharf watching the ships docked. We have a lovely time at Mission District; it was such a trendy area, full of restaurants, shops (where I bought a bike, a fixie one (I know, quite hipster)) and a great park called Dolores that was full of young people sunbathing and having fun. The only thing I regret haven't done was to visit Alcatraz. In fact I tried to, but there were no tickets left :-(

I really like to visit San Francisco a day, even, honestly, I don't know many things about that city. One of the things I have seen several times en some magazines or films is the famous golden gate bridge which join San Francisco with Marin. It's a "suspension bridge" of 1.970 m in length. Another curiosity is that San Francisco is one of the few places in the world where the people can ride on a national historic landmark, it's called cable cars and it's seems very interesting. San Francisco is considered as a one of the most beautiful cities in the world and, maybe in a close future, I would like yo go there and meet it by myself.

My best travel was when two friends and I went to Amsterdam. It was when we were studying in college, our third year. We were studying arts, and we wanted to see all the museums that this city had. When we arrived in Amsterdam we could see how beautiful this town was. All his streets had narrow buildings, with big canals with a lot of boats. It was so fun to rent bicycles and ride on the streets. This, city has light traffic. It’s a special place and the people are so nice. We visited some very important museums like the Vincent Van Gogh museum where we could see all the paintings that this genius has painted. I can see " the iris", the nicest painting that I 've seen in my life. It has special colors. When, you see it, you can smell the flowers and you can imagine the beautiful landscape where he painted this painting. Also we enjoyed the night life in this city , It is very similar to Spanish night life. There are a lot of young people and a lot of bars, It was very surprising for us because we always thought that this part of Europe was very boring.
