University Reporters---- That's YOU! Meet people from other departments. Practice your 2nd or 3rd language and help others practice theirs. Take a few minutes during your lunch hour to interview and be interviewed. There are a lot of interesting people on campus. If you are shy (tímido) this is a good activity for you. If you are outgoing, you can be the star reporter. The students in the photo above participated in the activity in September 2013.

Tuesday, May 20th 14:00-15:00 Building B, inside and out. Meet in the central hall. Take a list of questions and a "microphone" and start! You'll be surprised how easy it is to talk to others in another language. Exchange students are welcome ! We'd like to interview you in English and Spanish and you can ask us important questions in your language and see if we can respond. ¡Qué verguenza! No, no ¡Qué divertido!

RESULTS: We talked to 50 or 60 people in our University Reporters activity. About 25 were Spaniards, 2 of whom had just returned from a semester in Santa Fé, New Mexico and one was excited about being chosen to go to Irvine, California next year. Their English was great and they definitely weren't afraid to talk to us. At least 7 were Italians who participated actively. So did the Germans and the English. They had no problem with the langauge so we switched to Spanish. Then they also interviewed others. There were students from Morocco, Argentina, Venezuela, and France. Some of them helped us stop the professors who were out and about. A plastic bowling pin served as an impromptu microphone and a REPORTER sticker was enough identification. All participants got "I SPEAK English" stickers. As this activity was planned for lunch time, many staff members were on their lunch breaks. Most stopped to talk, but some were not up to the challenge and rushed on by. We had people from all the degree programs and even one who hadn't started the university yet. He told me he'd come to find out about the university and I could tell he enjoyed the surprise interview. His mother stood off to the side by the admissions office, smiling. And what about the students from Ukraine who had been living in Poland, going to school in England and were now on our exchange program in Spain. They spoke many languages and we tried out a few of them.

Thank you Ana Isabel and Kelly for participating. And thank you, all of you, who came by to interview or be interviewed. These activities work best when lots of people participate. -Wendy Vocabulary: language: idioma challenge: desafio rushed on by: pasó de prisa

jose Manuel Lopez Lopez A2 M37 T3 Hi Wendy, Learning English in this university can be easy and funny. There´s a lot of people from other countries (studying for several years and also Erasmus students). On the one hand it is really easy because you can talk and spend time with other students. On the other hand European University has a lot of gardens and places to have a coffee with them, what makes it also funny. Regards, Jose

Hi Wendy I think that this activity is really interesting and fun, but also is true that I am ashamed. This are experiences that help us know new people and understand the different studient's choices of our university.
