La Noche en Blanco---- Madrid: Awake All Night

Wendy . Blog Published 03 February 2009

Saturday Night Fever par excellence in Madrid on September 13th.
Thousands...millions of people were out in the streets, walking, talking, dancing, drinking and participating in a "Happening" reminiscent of the 60s but with a much more cosmopolitan aire.

Cultural activities abounded. I saw a wonderful play by Lope de Vega, "El Perro del Hortelano" at the Círculo Catalán at Plaza de España. And the ticket price: 0 Euros! There wasn't a free seat in the house for either the 9 pm nor 11 pm performance! The company has been invited to the "Corral de Comedias" in Almagro ! The actors were good. I especially liked "Tristán" and "Dorotea" who added sparkle to the show.

At 10:30 we joined the throngs crowding the sidewalks in front of the Royal Palace and completely obliterating the nearby streets. What a mass of humanity! (Madrid is always crowded on Saturday Nights---there are traffic jams at 3 am. No cars that night, but people jammed all the streets, and plazas, parks and cultural sites. What fun!

Next stop was to be the Opera House but unfortunately it was closed to the public. Why ??? The Palace was open. The Prado was open! Everything was open ! Oh, well, maybe next year.

Did you take to the streets on the "Noche en Blanco"? What did you do?
