Don't be embarrassed! Olvídate de tu "Sentido de ridículo" !

Wendy . Blog Published 10 September 2012

"I can read and write and more or less understand what people say, but I just
can't make myself speak in English/Spanish as a second language. I'm so embarrassed. I don't want to make a fool of myself in front of my peers. My accent is atrocious and I sound like a two year old. I just can't make myself talk to anyone. I know everyone will laugh at me."....... WRONG ! WRONG ATTITUDE !

Let's try that again:

"I can read and write and more or less understand what people say, and I'M GOING TO MAKE MYSELF speak in English/Spanish. I refuse to be embarrassed and I don't care if I make a fool of myself in front of my peers. We're just beginners. My accent is getting better, but I still sound like a foreign student learning a 2nd language. I force myself to talk to others in class and around campus. No one is laughing at me. They're laughing with me. We're all learning English/Spanish together.

Have you been to ENGLISH IN ACTION? It's a fun way to make yourself practice your English. NO ONE is quiet in these classes. You have to talk and you have a partner or partners to help you when you get stuck.

LAST week we had SPEED EXCHANGE, WALKING & TALKING, I CAN MAKE A PAPER AIRPLANE. Can YOU?, UNIVERSITY REPORTERS and INSTANT THEATER.

Did you come? No? Hope to see you at ENGLISH IN ACTION sometime in the near future.
.
REALITY CHECK:
.
Can you ask simple questions and formulate the answers?
Can you carry on a conversation?
Do you feel confident when you have to communicate in English?
Do you try to make yourself understood?
Do you just mumble and use gestures?
.
YOU should have answered YES, YES, YES, YES, NO !

Remember that a second language could be your passport to a new country, a new job, a new way of life.

It's a good attitude to think "They're laughing with me". I like this point of view. Last year I went to the encounter classes and this was the main iidea. I learnt with my partners, my teachers and I didn't feel embarrassed, I enjoyed very much.

I was feeling the same way a year ago, but then I went to England to visit a friend. I had to speak in English, but I thought I couldn't. I started to talk to all of her friends and I realized I could speak and understand English. It was awesome!
