Need practice speaking English?

Hello UE students, professors and staff,

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year. We hope you had a great summer, traveled extensively, and had many exciting adventures. Did you hear a variety of languages? Were you able to communicate with people wherever you went? I know that most of you are fluent in Spanish, and that many of you may speak Portuguese, French, Italian, Flemish, Swedish, Greek, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, etc...without any problem. That's great, but I'm more concerned about the rest of you, the ones that are afraid to try other languages, to move out of your comfort zone. What can you tell me about your communication skills in English? I often hear, "Yo, hablar inglés? Bromeas? " No,I'm not joking and it IS possible to learn. Now be honest. Do you speak English effortlessly or do you hide behind others and let them do the talking? Are you embarrassed because of your accent and lack of confidence? It's time to make a big effort and learn the language. Some day you'll want to be one of the "Españoles/Madrileños por el mundo". All of them make an effort to talk to others, and often times it's in English.

So a little bit of advice. Take advantage of your time at the university. There are people from all over the world on campus. Talk to them. Try out your English with them. You'll make new friends and gain confidence. Watch for the activities sponsored by the Language Center in Building A. Participate in them. Don't be shy. Speak up ! Try "Speed Exchange". It's fun.
