I recently read that, curiously, we are happiest in our old age. One of the reasons for this is that older people tend to have more reasonable and shorter term (for obvious reasons) objectives, while younger people set themselves longer term goals that are sometimes unrealistic or too challenging, which in turn leads to frustration and depression when they are not achieved. So the message would seem to be: keep it real and keep it short.
